Fluorination alternative
An alternative to Fluorination & Steel Containers.

Fluorination Barrier treatment
Fluorination prevents container paneling and distortion and reduces chemical permeation, weight loss, odor emission and flavor or fragrance loss.  The process exposes the surfaces of plastics and other materials to elemental fluorine under strictly controlled conditions of time, temperature, and pressure.  Hydrogen atoms on the exposed surfaces are replaced with fluorine atoms, creating a permanent fluorocarbon barrier on all exposed surfaces.
Fluorination Barrier Treatment
Some common benefits of fluorination are:
  • Reduces solvent and chemical permeation by up to 1000 times
  • Available for use on all polyethylene and polypropylene containers
  • Replace glass, metal, or more costly plastic resin containers with a safe, cost effective alternative
Chemicals and Products that presently use Fluorinated Bottles:
  • Acetone
  • Auto Additives
  • Charcoal Lighter
  • Degreaser
  • Electronics Industry Chemicals
  • Health and Beauty Care Products
  • Insecticides
  • Kerosene
  • Lubricants
  • Maintenance Chemicals
  • Paint Thinners (turpentine, etc.)
  • Plant Growth Products
  • Waxes, Cleaners and Polishes (various)
  • Weed Killers and Herbicides
  • Wood Preservatives

Test data on fluorination barrier treated bottles
Product Loss Chart
These charts show the superiority of fluorinated containers (Level 1) compared to untreated bottles for packaging chemicals.  The non-pigmented HDPE bottles were 125 cubic centimeters in size with a nominal wall thickness of 0.5 millimeters
.
These weight loss tests were conducted in ovens at 50°C.  The container openings were heat sealed with a liner made of aluminum foil polyester-polyethylene to insure leak tightness.  Data was obtained by weighing the bottles after a 28 day test.

 Solvent Loss Chart
Chart showing % of weight loss in HDPE containers without barrier treatment due to permeation of various aggressive chemicals.

With Out Fluorination Surface Modification treatment for plastic, Some products can easily permeate container walls causing loss of product integrity and often causing paneling. As chemicals permeate through the walls, overall package integrity may also be seriously affected
With Fluorination Surface Modification treatment for plastic, fluorine atoms are bonded to inner and outer surfaces creating a double-sided barrier. Fluorination allows polyolefins (HDPE, LDPE, and PP) to accept a greater range of products and replace glass, metal or more costly plastic resins.

Here is a list of products that we carry that can be Fluorinated...
