Antioxidants

Antioxidants are commonly used to protect plastics and other materials from oxidation during elevated or high temperature processing or storage. Oxidation can result in the loss of physical properties, discoloration, and a change in melt viscosity. There are two types of antioxidants, primary antioxidants and secondary antioxidants. Primary antioxidants are used to improve the long-term stability of plastics in low to more moderate temperatures. It donates H+ and scavenges peroxy radical intermediates. The secondary antioxidants are hydroperoxide decomposers that are most effective at higher temperatures.
