Chemical Foaming Agents

Chemical Foaming Agents or CFA's are additives that release gas when decomposed imparting a cellular structure to the material. The CFA gas remains dissolved in the melt while the melt is under pressure and when the melt is injected into the mold, the pressure is reduced allowing the gas to expand the polymer. Phoenix's CFA's are used to reduce weight and prevent the formation of sink marks, while maintaining good surface aesthetics. Phoenix manufactures endothermic, exothermic & binary CFA's for olefins, styrene's, & engineered grade resins as well as CFA's manufactured specifically for structural foam molding, extrusion, & film.

  • Cel-Span® CFA 200 is a 50% active Binary foaming agent specially formulated with activators and self-nucleating agents that contribute to uniform cell formation and smooth surfaces. Cel-Span® CFA 200 concentrate releases mostly N2 and CO2 gases upon decomposition. This product is safe when used under the conditions of intended use. Upon complete decomposition (activation) of the C.F.A., the extruded and Injected parts will become white, similar in color to endothermic chemical foaming agents. Cel-Span® CFA 200 is recommended for extrusion, injection molding, and structural molding of any kind of thermoplastics, except polycarbonate and thermoplastic polyesters.

  • Cel-Span® CFA 844 (55 lb. bags) is a highly loaded 80% active endothermic foaming agent formulated for applications with high gas requirements. Cel-Span® CFA 844 concentrate releases carbon dioxide gas upon decomposition. This product is safe when used under the conditions of intended use. Upon complete decomposition (activation) of the C.F.A., the extruded and injected parts will become white, a color common to endothermic chemical foaming agents.
