Are these paint can lids recyclable?
Yes, metal, hybrid and plastic paint can lids are recyclable. As steel retains its properties through the recycling process, it can be recycled repeatedly. Old metal paint cans are used to make tools, equipment and building materials. In fact, many of our metal paint cans are made of at least 25% post-consumer content. Additionally, many of our plastic paint cans are regrind containers. Regrind containers are made up of ground up plastic that has been previously used, then ground up into raw material and made into something entirely new. These containers will almost always be black.
Some of the metal paint can lids are called unlined or lined. What are these linings? And what does unlined mean?
Metal lids are lined with either epoxy phenolic or gold phenolic lining. Epoxy phenolic lining is a gray-colored lining that is used for alkaline products, fatty acids, detergents, emulsions, general organic chemicals, surfactants and water-based resins. The epoxy phenolic linings have been designed to provide outstanding chemical resistance in a pH range of 7.0 – 9.0. Gold phenolic lining is a gold-colored lining that is a good option for solvents and oil-based products. Gold phenolic linings are also FDA approved, which makes them safe for food products. Unlined paint cans are sprayed or rinsed with a rust inhibitor that helps slow rusting prior to filling the cans with a specific product. Unlined paint cans are good for holding oil-based or solvent coatings.
Do I have to match the lid material to the can?
We recommend pairing the same paint can and lid material. For instance, you would want to use a plastic lid with a plastic paint can, a metal lid with a metal paint can and a hybrid lid with a hybrid paint can. We also recommend pairing the lid’s lining with the paint can’s lining. For example, unlined metal paint can lids should be used with unlined metal paint cans. Similarly, gray epoxy phenolic lined lids should be matched with gray epoxy phenolic lined cans, and gold phenolic lined lids should be matched with gold phenolic lined cans. Our naming system allows you to easily match a lid with its compatible can.
