Drum bungs– also known as bung caps or bung plugs– are the closures that fit into a drum’s bunghole opening, which is used for filling and emptying the container. The material of a drum bung should provide the strength, chemical compatibility, and corrosion resistance necessary to safely contain the drum’s contents.

The Cary Company’s drum bungs are made out of plastic (HDPE, LDPE, PP, nylon) or metal (steel, zinc). They are often accompanied by a rubber gasket, which helps create a tight seal to prevent leaking and spills. Plastic drums are commonly paired with plastic bungs, while steel drums can be paired with both metal bungs for steel or plastic bungs for steel bungs depending on the application.

Selecting the right drum bung begins with identifying the threading of your drum’s bunghole, commonly NPS or NPT. Drum plugs need to match the bunghole threading to ensure a proper fit. A 55 gallon drum bung is often a 2” or ¾” size, but this will vary depending on the drum.

Drum bung material should be compatible with the contents of the drum, such as chemical, oil, or food products. Additionally, bung caps can be designed specifically towards steel or plastic drums. The Cary Company has Rieke plugs for plastic drums and Rieke plugs for steel drums drums, as well as Tri-Sure plugs for plastic drums and steel drums.

A bung gasket’s material can also impact your decision. EPDM rubber gaskets boast water-resistance, Viton gaskets offer harsh chemical resistance, Buna gaskets provide oil and solvent resistance, and Poly-Irradiated gaskets are resistant to high temperatures. 

Finally, you should consider whether your application calls for any venting due to pressure buildup. If yes, look for drum bung styles with vents.
