Pails and buckets are similar in many ways, but the one thing that differentiates them is their purpose. Some pails can be UN rated to store hazardous materials when paired with the proper lid, meaning they can hold chemicals, gardening products, cleaning supplies, and other potentially hazardous substances. On the other hand, buckets are generally used for storing more practical items such as gifts, canned beverages, home decor, farming needs, and more.

Food grade buckets are made with materials that are safe and non-toxic. Regular buckets are made with materials that can leave toxic residue that is not safe for storing food. Regular buckets can affect the contents inside, so if you are storing food be sure the bucket is FDA compliant.

Not all buckets made from plastic are food grade, but if they are they will generally be labeled either 1 (polyethylene terephthalate), 2 (high-density polyethylene), 4 (low-density polyethylene), or 5 (polypropylene). The plastic a bucket is made from can be easily identified by the recycling number on the bottom of the container. Buckets made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) are considered the best material for food storage since they don't absorb much moisture and don't leach chemicals, but be sure to look for specifications indicating the bucket is FDA approved before use.
