Open Head Steel Pails

Open head steel pails are durable containers used in various industries for storing and transporting liquid and solid materials. The open head feature allows easy filling and access, making open head containers a popular choice for handling and storing bulk materials. Our steel pails are available in UN Rated and non-UN Rated options. Depending on the lining, UN Rated open head steel pails can be used for applications such as chemicals, solvents, adhesives, and other hazardous materials depending on the lining. Non-UN Rated open head steel pails are great for non-hazardous applications such as coatings, scrap metal, and powders.

The Cary Company offers various lining options including gold phenolic, epoxy phenolic, or pigmented phenolic linings.

Gold phenolic linings are unmodified phenolics, a type of phenolic resin that hasn't been changed or mixed with other materials to improve its qualities. Gold phenolic linings have a high degree of acid and solvent resistance. Typical products used with gold phenolic linings include acid compounds, agricultural chemicals, corrosive chemicals, solvents, and petroleum products. Gold phenolic linings are not recommended for alkaline products.

Epoxy phenolic linings provide excellent chemical resistance. The resin ratio varies in different formulations to adjust flexibility and chemical resistance. Typical products used with epoxy linings include alkaline products, detergents, fatty acids, general organic chemicals, and water based resins.

Pigmented phenolic linings offer a higher degree of acid and solvent resistance than epoxy and gold phenolic linings. Their coatings are pigmented to reach a red-brown color, which allows for higher film thickness. Pigmented phenolic linings are suitable for products including acid compounds, agricultural chemicals, insecticides, corrosive chemicals, solvents, essential oils, and petroleum products.

Cary offers a selection of steel pail lids, including lug covers and dish covers. 

Lug covers are steel covers with steel tabs. The steel tabs must be crimped down to secure the lid to the body of the pail. To secure a lug cover, you must use a closing tool. Some of our lug covers are available with Rieke Flexspout®, an opening in the cover which allows for easy dispensing. Our lug covers are available unlined or with epoxy phenolic, gold phenolic, or pigmented phenolic lining.

Dish covers allow for easy removal to access pail contents. To secure a dish cover, you must use a lever lock ring. Pails using a dish cover are recommended for storing solid materials. Our dish covers are unlined.

Steel pails can generally withstand temperatures up to 200℉ (93℃). Anything beyond this temperature may cause the pail structure to fail. Before using a steel pail for applications dealing with excessive heat, it’s important to check the manufacturer's guidelines for specific temperature ratings.
