What Is in a Spill Kit?

What is a spill kit?

A spill kit is a prepackaged set of equipment desgined to handle, absorb and clean dangerous substances. Because of these kits, employees can quickly respond to emergency spills all in one convenient location.

Spills in the work environment happen more often than people think. Whether it is as simple as something tipping over or a leak from an object that was not secure, it is important to make sure that the spill gets contained and cleaned up as quickly and efficiently as possible. There are four main types of spill kits: universal, oil only, HazMat and Acid.

What is inside a spill kit?

Before we begin understanding about the different types of spill kits, let's first talk about the contents inside the average spill kit. While there may be additional items depending on the spill kit type, below are the standard items commonly found and used in each spill skit.

Safety Goggles: safety goggles ensure that no chemicals or harmful substances make contact with the eyes. These goggles are designed to fit over any pair of glasses and provide a secure fit with the included strap.

Nitrile Gloves: nitrile gloves can be used to avoid coming into contact with harmful chemicals or substances that can cause burns or other injuries. The gloves are designed to be non-allergenic and allow users to hold onto items that are wet or oily with ease.

Absorbent Socks: absorbent socks are used on the floor or surface of the spill. The socks act as a wall to ensure that the none of the spill continues to travel.

Absortbent Pads: absorbent pads are used on the inside of the sock walls to soak up any excess liquids. They are made out of a sonically-bonded polypropylene material and are known for being durable. They handle oil, water and chemicals with ease.

Garbage Bags: when spills are cleaned up, kits come with garbage bags to make sure that the socks, pads and other items that were used are safely and securely discarded.

While trash bags are most commonly found in the majority of spill kits, there are other kits that offer a specific disposable bags or containers that handle unique spills.
