About Standard Felt Liquid Filter Bags

Key benefits
  • Micron ratings from 1 to 200
  • All industry standard & custom sizes available
  • Broad chemical compatibility
  • High flow/low pressure drop
  • Sewn or fully-welded construction
  • Choice of steel ring or plastic flange
  • Temperature ratings to 200° F (PO), 275° F (PE ), 425° F (HT) and 500° F (Teflon®)
Felt Bag Materials
Constructed using 100% synthetic fibers in polypropylene, polyester, Nomex® and Teflon®. The proper combination of fiber diameters, weights and thicknesses result in an economical depth filter media. To reduce fiber migration, Polypropylene bags are treated with a glazed finish, while Polyester and Nomex® bags are singed.

  • Polypropylene and Polyester materials meet FDA regulations for food contact under CFR21, Section 177.1520
  • Silicone-free construction
  • High dirt holding capacity
  • Ability to remove both solid and gelatinous particles
  • Low cost
  • Glazed/singed finish on Polypropylene & Polyester reduces fiber-shedding
Felt Bag Styles
Steel-ring bags have a galvanized steel ring (stainless steel optional) sewn into the top of the bag. They are supplied with sewn seams standard. Plastic flange bags have a specially-designed flange sewn to the top of the bag. They are supplied with sewn seams standard (fully-welded seams available upon request).

Welded Construction
Fully-welded bags are available in polypropylene and polyester felt for #1, #2, #3, #4 and #5 plastic flanges.

  • No needle holes, thus increasing efficiencies by preventing by-pass
  • Elimination of threads further reduces possibility of fiber-shedding

What is the difference between a felt and mesh filter bag?
Both felt and mesh bags will meet FDA regulations, however felt bag materials have a high dirt holding capacity, temperature ranges up to 500° F, the ability to remove both solid and gelatinous particles, and the singed/ glaze finish on polyester and polypropylene reduces fiber shredding. Mesh bags on the other hand contain a silicone-free construction, have a high flow/low pressure media, a wide chemical compatibility, and the temperature ratings to 350° F.
What are the components of a filter bag part number?
There are many different components that go into creating a filter bag part number. These components include the media type, the micron rating, the bag dimensions, the ring/flange style, and also different customizable options. For more detailed information, take a look at our Guide to Liquid Filter Bags.
Is a liquid filter cartridge the best industrial filtration product?
When it comes to physical sediment filtration, some of the most common industrial filtration products are cartridge filters and liquid filter bags. Both have the ability to remove solid or gelatinous contaminants during liquid filtration in a variety of applications including industrial waters systems, chemical processing equipment, etc.
What is the difference between a bag filter and a cartridge filter?
A cartridge has many advantages. For example, it has the ability to compact, it has a lower initial investment, it is more suitable for fine powders with lower concentrations and is recommended for sandblasting lines. These are not recommended for very fine powders. A bag filter, on the other hand, is more flexible, is more suitable for powders of various nature and sizes, is easier to clean with the assistance of an automatic system and has a lower energy cost.
What is the difference between a sewn and welded seam?
A sewn seam is the industry standard. It uses a 5-line system when sewing and has a strong construction for that heavy dirt holding capacity. A welded seam is available in polypropylene and polyester felt for #1, #2, #3, #4, and #5 plastic flanges. There are no needle holes or thread contamination. It contains a precision bonded cutting of the fabric edges and maintains the same efficiency as filter media.
What are the benefits to the different ring styles?
The Cary Company offers three ring and flange styles: steel ring, plastic flange, and drawstring. Steel ring bags feature a galvanized steel ring sewn directly into the top, along with a cotton handle, providing a secure gasket and strong support within the housing. When using steel or stainless steel rings, we recommend contacting a filter specialist for more information and verification. Plastic flange bags include a molded flange with a built‑in handle for faster, cleaner installation and disposal. The smooth design reduces contaminant build‑up, and the sewn or welded collar keeps the media firmly in place. Drawstring bags offer an adjustable top diameter for easy tie‑on piping, making them ideal for gravity‑feed applications and simple disposal.
What does the micron number mean on a filter?
The micron rating is the size at which particles are retained by the filter. For example, a five-micron filter will stop particles of 5 microns or larger from passing through the media. A micron is a micrometer which is a thousandth of a millimeter.
Will a filter work for paint? Dust? Water?
While there are many different uses for the various filter bags The Cary Company offers, please refer to the chemical resistance guide for more information
Where do the filters ship from?
Many of our liquid filter bags ship from our warehouse in Addison, IL. For more information about where our bags are shipped from, please contact us at 630.629.6600
What is the recommended operating temperature for filter bags?
The recommended operating temperature will vary depending on the different materials and media. Please reference the chemical resistance guide for more information.
