Specifications
This super fine vermiculite features a small particle size meeting Grade A-1 specifications. This super fine vermiculite is lightweight, has low thermal conductivity and incombustibility making it ideal as an aggregate in lightweight concrete. It's also commonly used for packing during shipping and storing and as an absorbent in industrial spill control. Vermiculite grade A-1 can be purchased in bag quantities.

Key benefits:

  • Low thermal conductivity
  • High water holding capacity
  • Lightweight
  • Can be used for packing and storing
  • Primarily used as aggregate in lightweight concrete
Applications:
Gardening - A major staple in the horticulture and greenhouse industries, vermiculite's properties allow for the material to be a natural soil additive as it has a neutral pH of 7 and expands in size during exfoliation to aerate the soil and improve drainage. Vermiculite is also an absorbent which aids in the proper maintenance of moisture in the soil preventing accumulation of molds and bacteria that can cause disease in plants. Additionally, it can retain then release plant food and nutrients aiding in growth and allowing for seed germination even when used with only fertilizer. Vermiculite is essential for improving yield in square foot gardening where the risk of over or under fertilizing and watering is high and space is limited. Both permanent and organic, vermiculite has many uses in gardening including transplanting rooted plants and bulbs, soil conditioning, decreasing propagation, root cuttings and even arranging cut flowers.

Packing & Shipping - Vermiculite works well for shipping and packaging as it is lightweight and will provide impact and shock-absorbency when packed around items in case of improper handling. This loose-fill material can insulate even irregular-shaped objects as it is easily pourable and compressible for complete coverage. Compatible with hazmat and industrial packing, vermiculite is fireproof and inert while capable of absorbing hazardous material leaks that may occur. This nonabrasive material will not breakdown or decay over time making it suitable for long-term storage.

Construction - Concrete mixed with vermiculite is 15% lighter, less prone to cracking and stronger due to is moisture absorbency during curing than regular concrete making this material common in the construction industry. Vermiculite provides thermal and sound insulation when added to concrete and is often a component in plasters to allow for easy application by improving coverage and adhesion to many substrates. This material is commonly used in the base of vinyl liner pools mixed with portland cement and sand as it allows for easier cleaning due to its nonabrasive nature which is also gentler on the feet than many traditional concrete pool floors. Vermiculite does not degrade or decay over time and will not attract pests or rodents. Another major benefit of the addition of vermiculite to construction is that it is nontoxic, fireproof and non-combustible for added safety particularly in deck systems.
