Plastic ratchet caps are used for sealing beverage containers. While shopping at the grocery store, you may have noticed that many milk and juice containers use them to indicate if the product had been opened or tampered with.

While plastic ratchet caps are recyclable, many municipal recycling programs do not accept plastic caps by themselves. These caps are also compatible with glass, but keep in mind that it is not a material they are typically paired with. Using plastic ratchet caps with glass does not guarantee it will be tamper evident.

Tamper evident ratchet caps are specifically designed with a ring or band attached to the cap. Ratchet caps are applied by aligning the cap with the threads on the bottle's neck and screwing it until there is slight resistance, causing the band to “ratchet” into place. When the cap is unscrewed from the container, the ring is broken, indicating that the container has been opened and potentially tampered with.
